The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology oversees the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE), a public organization. In order to support the delivery of high-quality education at the pre-primary, primary, secondary, and teacher education levels, the Institute is tasked with interpreting government policies on education to align with curricular programs and instructional materials. Act No. 13 of 1963 created the Institute, first known as the Institute of Education (IE), as a component of the University College of Dar es Salaam. Its main goal was to improve the teaching and learning process in schools and teacher education institutions by coordinating the University College of Dar es Salaam’s teacher training program with the Ministry of Education at the time. In July 1970, the University College of Dar es Salaam was elevated to the status of an autonomous University, the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). The Institute of Education remained a constituent unit of the newly formed University. In 1975, IE was elevated to a corporate body by Act of Parliament No. 13 of 1975 which placed it under the Ministry of Education and Culture, thus making it independent of UDSM.
