The Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) created Saint Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences (SFUCHAS) in response to the Catholic Church’s desire to help train more physicians and other health professionals in Tanzania due to the lack of qualified workers in the country’s health sector, particularly in Tanzania’s underprivileged areas. After the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS) in Mwanza, SFUCHAS is the second medical school owned by Tanzania’s Catholic bishops. Notably, SFUCHAS is Tanzania’s first medical university college to be founded in a rural area. On November 2, 2010, the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) granted SFUCHAS a Certificate of Provisional Registration, and it was formally opened. Hadji Hussein Mponda (MP), the then Minister for Health and Social Welfare on 12th June, 2011 represented by His Hon. Philipo Augustino Mulugo (MP) the then Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training. In September 2013, the TCU issued the Certificate of Full Registration (CFR) to the College. The college is an equal opportunity employer.
